At the GMCA bus sub-committee meeting on 19/11/2021, it is proposed to withdraw the 408 service between Oldham and Rochdale. Proposed replacements for this service include an extension of the 402 service to Shaw and Buckstones and merging the 'Rochdale Runners' local brand and the 435 to create new circulars R9 and R10 for Milnrow, Newhey, and Shaw.

The implications of this on Shaw residents mean the loss of a direct bus service to Oldham- which is relied upon for work, education, and leisure. The 402 would add at least an additional 30 minutes to the journey time which in some cases would be impractical for local residents accessing the town centre. 

Additionally, areas such as Milnrow and Newhey would lose their direct bus to Oldham completely and Oldham a direct bus to Milnrow and Newhey (as well as shopping and employment opportunities at Kingsway). Yes, these areas are on the Metrolink network however the Oldham/Rochdale line is notorious for antisocial behaviour and not safe for travelling alone.
