Keep South Albany High School's Mascot

South Albany High School became the South Albany Rebels in 1971. A group of people came together and voted on the name and the mascot. Over time, the mascot itself has changed from a soldier, a confederate flag, to the current mascot, which is a sword and flag with SA on the flag itself. There is nothing offensive in this mascot.

A small group of people are asking that "Rebel" be changed. They are tying a racial connotation to the word "Rebel". It is so much more than a word. The word rebel itself, has no racial ties. (Rebel; person who rises in opposition or armed resistance against an established government or ruler)  South Albany is a diverse campus full of pride, and community. The student body amasses kids and faculty from every walk of life.

We, the community, parents, and alumni are asking that the name not be considered for change. It is part of Albany. It is who we are as a community. Students wear their "Rebel Red" proudly. Don't take that away from us & the future Rebel.
