On March 8th, 2017, Breana Harmon was reported missing to the Denison Police Department after witnesses noticed the door to her vehicle was open with personal items, including a phone and keys, scattered on the ground. A few hours later she went into a church bleeding, wearing only a shirt, bra and underwear, claiming that three black men in ski masks kidnapped and raped her. She claimed that she was raped by two of the men while the third man held her down. This incident was all over the news, making people in our local community fearful of individuals kidnapping women. Many men in the surrounding area were questioned, but Breana couldn’t give any information other than the suspects’ race. No suspects were ever identified or arrested in the case. Denison Police Department notices inconsistencies in the story within a few days and medical workers didn’t find any evidence that she was raped. On March 21st. 2017, Breana confessed that her story was fabricated and that her injuries were self-inflicted. She claimed that her and her fiancé had been fighting, so she self-harmed and cut up her clothes. She also stated that she made up the rape so her family wouldn’t be mad at her.

On February 24th, 2018, Breana pleaded guilty to four felony counts of tampering with physical evidence and government documents. She will be sentenced on March 20th, 2018 and despite the four felony counts, the plea deal leaves two options: either a deferred adjudication arrangement or probation.

Breana’s hoax hurt our community, especially its African-American residents. Our community has a racial divide as it is and this incident did not help. This is a serious crime as it could have caused someone to go to prison if the situation had been slightly different. False accusations have put many men in jail. It’s not a trifling matter to make false claims, there are serious consequences for not only the men accused, but for the sexual assault victims whose credibility suffers. A false report of this type should carry the same penalty as the crime itself. It causes way too much grief and hurt to those accused.

What I’m asking for is for this case to be re-evaluated before she goes to her final court date. I know that it could be a long shot, but this what she’s facing is currently a slap on the wrist for what she actually did.
