Grant the town of Reading city status
Grant the town of Reading city status
The Issue
Reading is currently the largest town in the United Kingdom without official city status. With a thriving population of over 300,000 people, a world-class university, and an economy that drives the entire Thames Valley, we operate as a city in every single way—except on paper.
For centuries, our civic progress has been held back by decisions made by the Crown. In 1539, King Henry VIII violently dismantled Reading Abbey, executed our last Abbot, and stripped our community of its wealth, land, and institutional independence. Had our historic Abbey Church survived, it would have naturally become a regional cathedral, guaranteeing Reading city status hundreds of years ago under royal tradition.
Instead, our heritage was left in ruins, and the wealth of our town was extracted to line royal pockets. Today, despite repeatedly proving our worth through multiple civic bids, Reading continues to be passed over in ceremonial competitions while much smaller locations are granted the honor.
This petition calls on the Cabinet Office and the Crown to rectify this historical injustice. We demand that:
Reading be officially recognized as a city without having to wait decades for competitive royal milestones.
The historical destruction of our cultural and economic infrastructure by the state be formally acknowledged as a defining factor in our modern civic standing.
It is time to stop treating the UK's largest town as a footnote. Sign this petition to demand the recognition, status, and respect that the people of Reading have rightfully earned.Recent studies have shown that attaining city status often brings increased recognition, tourism, and business opportunities that stimulate further economic prosperity. Cities across the UK, including nearby contenders, have reaped the benefits of this esteemed recognition, witnessing an influx of investment and improvement of civic amenities. Reading's eligibility and capability to thrive as a city is indisputable; its strategic location and infrastructure make it an ideal candidate.
By granting city status, the Crown can ensure Reading receives the attention and resources it needs to address challenges like rising housing demands, transportation improvements, and environmental sustainability efforts. This change would not only acknowledge the historical and current contributions of Reading and its residents but would set the stage for further achievements and enhanced quality of life for the entire community.
Therefore, we ask the Crown to recognize the merit and accomplishments of Reading by granting it city status. Let's work together to ensure that Reading gets the respect and resources it has long deserved. Join us in advocating for this significant change by signing this petition. Together, we can make a lasting difference for the future of Reading.
