"Grant ST Status to Assam's Adivasis NOW: End 200 Years of Tea Garden Exploitation!"

The Issue

The Adivasi communities of Assam have been a cornerstone of the state’s vibrant tea industry for over 180 years. These communities, including descendants of the Santhal, Munda, Oraon, and Gond tribes from central India, have dedicated their lives to working in the vast tea gardens under harsh conditions. These gardens are vital, contributing over 50% of India’s tea exports and sustaining millions of livelihoods. However, despite their significant contributions, Adivasi workers continue to face severe social and economic inequalities and are yet to be recognised as Scheduled Tribes in Assam.

Being recognised as Scheduled Tribes is a fundamental step in addressing these historic injustices, providing the Adivasi communities with access to reservations in education, employment, and political representation, as well as protections against exploitation. This recognition is not only a matter of justice but also essential to preserving and nurturing the rich cultural heritage these communities bring to Assam.

In many instances, Adivasi communities are deprived of basic amenities such as healthcare, schooling, and proper housing conditions. Their hard work under the sweltering sun contrasts sharply with the vast profits made by the tea industry. This imbalance underscores the urgent need for policy reform and recognition that acknowledges their rightful claims and contributions.

We urge Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Arjun Munda, and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes to prioritise and expedite the recognition of Adivasi communities as Scheduled Tribes in Assam. This move will not only provide them with necessary legal protections but also uplift them socioeconomically, ultimately contributing to a more equitable society.

Sign this petition to stand with the Adivasi communities of Assam in their fight for justice and equality. Your support can foster real change and bring about much-needed reform to improve their livelihoods and secure a better future for their children. It is time to right these historical wrongs and give these communities the recognition and respect they deserve. Together, we can make a difference.
