The Issue

Growing up, my child dedicated herself to cheerleading with boundless enthusiasm and hard work, participating in every practice and event with unwavering commitment. Despite her remarkable dedication, she was never afforded the opportunity to compete in competitions as a high school athlete, as cheerleading was not recognized as a competitive sport during her time in school. Now, as an volunteer at a high school in Pinellas County, she's facing the same obstacle — having been initially promised the opportunity to take her team to competitions, only to be later informed that their chance was rescinded due to cheerleading's current non-sport status.

In Pinellas County, cheerleading is an integral part of high school culture. These athletes devote countless hours to practice, perfecting routines that require athleticism, precision, and teamwork. Yet, they are denied the opportunity to showcase their skills in a competitive setting. Across the nation, cheerleading has been recognized by organizations like the NCAA and the American Academy of Pediatrics as a sport, due to its physical demands and benefits.

Recognizing cheerleading as a sport will open doors for these talented cheerleaders, allowing them the chance to compete on a larger stage, potentially earn athletic scholarships, and gain recognition for their hard-earned skills. Competitions provide valuable opportunities for personal growth, promoting teamwork, leadership, and discipline — skills that are essential for success in life.

Moreover, Florida has a vibrant and competitive cheerleading circuit that could engage and inspire many young athletes. By allowing Pinellas County high schools to participate, we not only elevate the status of our athletes, but also bring communities together to celebrate their achievements.

We urge the Pinellas County School Board and local education authorities to recognize cheerleading as a competitive sport and provide the necessary support for teams to participate in competitions. By doing so, they will not only be honoring the dedication of countless young athletes and coaches but also fostering an environment where talent and hard work are celebrated.

Please, support this petition to make cheerleading a recognized sport in our high schools. Sign this petition to empower our county's young athletes and provide them with the opportunities they deserve!
