Grant SEND kids an equal education- offer more support
The Issue
GRANT SEND KIDS AN EDUCATION IN THE UK.
Too many kids with mental health and SEND needs are lost in the system of UK education. This has to be stopped. Kids who are unable to attend mainstream schools deserve an education, yet SEND schools do not have enough spaces or funding to welcome these children. Many end up out of school, and miss out on vital education and exams. British Secondary schools are providing inadequate support, and are not equipped to help these children.
sign this petition today to help SEND children, and make sure they too get the education they deserve, and education that is accessible.
If this petition reaches Parliament, there should be changes made. Secondary schools must provide resources for home learning if children are unable to attend school, and use section 19 to provide education- section 19 is linked here.
The children and families act 2014 Part 3 states provision is to be made for SEND children and promote their safeguarding and welfare. This should also be reinforced into schools. The children and families act 2014 part 3 is linked here.
These laws are not always enforced in schools, yet they should be to ensure kids with SEND and mental health needs receive education. an EHCP is often hard to seek out as it requires evidence from schools, appearing infront of a panel and months / years of time. This is not an option for everyone and should be faster and easier to obtain. More info about this is linked here.
Local Authority should Research into alternate schools, and the government should fund more alternative schools being built, more places in these schools, upkeeping of these schools, and also online schooling options too. The time to act is now. This is urgent. Children cannot wait longer for equal education, and their wellbeing is not prioritised, rather their attendance and data is.
A total of 18.4% of children in England have some kind of special educational need, as of June 2024. This is roughly 1/5 of children, this high number means many kids are lost in the system without support.
what happens if you’re lost in the system?
1: forgotten about and therefore do not receive support
2: potentially attendance fines
3: unable to access support if you do not have an EHCP
4: unable to obtain an EHCP if you do not have evidence or if school does not co-operate
