Grant Permanent Residency to Long-Term Temporary Visa Holders in Australia

The issue

We are a family who has lived in Australia for 11 long years  and 12 years starting on temporary visas once more, we constantly uncertain about our future. Our children were aged 7 and 4 years old when we first came here and now they are 18 and 15, have spent most of their lives here. They are stateless and unable to pursue education due to the short-term nature of our visas which expire every three months. This situation is not unique to us; many families share this predicament.

According to the Department of Home Affairs (2019), there were approximately 1.6 million temporary visa holders residing in Australia, including students, skilled workers and their dependents. However, the pathway towards permanent residency remains unclear for many. As my eldest son had called many lawyers in order to ask for help and they all told him because although he is 18 he can not apply for his own visa as the law doesnt approve off that unless you have a medical condition if not you have to be married, He is only 18 not old enough for this at all. He needs to study, grow and settle but with how everything is going he might end up like us, working as a labourer and it isnt a bad thing but i wanted my kids to not have to work as hard as we did and you tell me if hoping for my kids to have a better future when what we have a bad thing??

Please we really need this we have waited too long maybe people we know have left the world back in Sri lanka and we have never gotten to see our loved ones pass away nor have my kids been able to experience what family is like because all off them are there, because off that they have lost connections with loving grandparents.

We urge the Australian government to provide a clear pathway towards permanent residency for long-term temporary visa holders like us who have contributed significantly to Australian society over several years. This will provide stability for families like ours and allow our children access education without fear of having their lives uprooted.

Please sign this petition if you believe that everyone deserves a place they can call home permanently after contributing positively over an extended period. Let's urge the Australian government to review its immigration policies and consider granting permanent residency status more readily available for people who have made Australia their home.

Please help us we have waiting for too long and i dont have the capacity to wait any longer the stress and fear on whats going to happen to my kids is something i cant bear any longer.

Please Please Please.
