Grant Permanent Residency to Long-Term Residents

The issue

To: The Honorable Members of the Parliament of Australia

We, the undersigned, call on the Parliament of Australia to consider and enact legislation that grants permanent residency to individuals who have been living in Australia for more than 10 years.

Background:

Australia is a nation built on the contributions of immigrants. Many individuals have made Australia their home for over a decade, contributing to our economy, culture, and community. Despite their long-term residency, these individuals often face uncertainty regarding their future in Australia due to their non-permanent status.

Reasons for the Petition:

 1. Economic Contribution: Long-term residents have been paying taxes and contributing to the economy. They have invested in local businesses, supported community initiatives, and have become integral members of the workforce.
 2. Social Integration: Many of these individuals have established deep roots in their communities, forming friendships, raising families, and participating in local events. They are not just residents; they are part of the fabric of Australian society.
 3. Humanitarian Considerations: Granting permanent residency to those who have demonstrated stability and commitment to Australia aligns with our values of compassion and fairness. Many of these individuals have faced significant challenges and have shown resilience and dedication to their adopted home.
 4. Legal Stability: Providing a pathway to permanent residency will offer these individuals the security they need to plan for their futures, invest in their communities, and contribute even more to the Australian economy.

Our Request:

We urge the Parliament of Australia to:

 • Introduce legislation that allows individuals who have lived in Australia for over 10 years to apply for permanent residency, provided they meet specific criteria (e.g., good character, tax contributions, community involvement).
 • Consider the diverse backgrounds and circumstances of long-term residents, ensuring that the pathway to permanent residency is fair and accessible.

Conclusion:

By granting permanent residency to those who have demonstrated their commitment to Australia for over a decade, we can strengthen our communities, enhance our economy, and uphold the values that make Australia a great nation.
