Grant Parents Unrestricted Access to Their Minor Children's Medical Records

Grant Parents Unrestricted Access to Their Minor Children's Medical Records
The Issue
As a parent in Michigan, I recently experienced a situation that left me concerned and frustrated. I called my child's pediatrician to check on an appointment for my 14-year-old son that I had previously made. To my surprise, when I logged into MyChart, his past appointments and details were no longer visible to me. Upon inquiry, the representative informed me that I needed permission from my minor child to view his records or make his appointments.
This is not an isolated incident but rather a widespread issue affecting many parents across the state. With many medical institutions now requiring parental access permissions from minors for their medical records, parents are finding themselves unable to monitor their children's health effectively.
While it is important for our children to learn how to manage their health independently as they grow older, completely removing parental privileges while they are still minors seems excessive and potentially harmful. Parents play a crucial role in ensuring the wellbeing of their children and should have unrestricted access to their minor children's medical records.
Accordingly, we call upon lawmakers in Michigan to revise this policy and restore parents' rights without needing any form of permission or restrictions lifted by the minors themselves. This will ensure that parents can continue playing an active role in managing their children’s health until they reach adulthood.
Please sign this petition if you believe in empowering parents with unrestricted access to their minor children's medical records!
