Grant NESCAC Football Teams Access to D3 Football Playoffs
The Issue
The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) currently prohibits its football teams from participating in the NCAA Division III playoffs. This policy disadvantages NESCAC athletes by denying them the opportunity to compete for national titles as well as gain the experiences and recognition their peers in other conferences enjoy.
Traditionally, NESCAC aligned with the Ivy League, which didn't allow its football teams to compete during the postseason. Based on recent events, changes have occurred that allow the football teams of the Ivy League to compete in the Division 1 FCS playoffs. NESCAC still hasn't modified its policies despite this. Thus making it one of the few conferences in the country that prevents its football teams from participating in postseason competitions.
Why It Needs Change
1. Equity in Competition: Admitting post-season eligibility for NESCAC teams gives our student-athletes the same opportunities as other athletes nationally. In addition, almost all other NESCAC sports are granted the right to be in the playoffs.
2. Enhancing Brand and Reputation of Universities: National playoffs tremendously boost the profiles of the participating institutions. It increases the visibility of NESCAC schools, which will positively reflect in numerous activities campuswide, such as recruitment and alumni engagement.
3. No Additional Financial Cost: The NCAA reimburses schools for travel expenses incurred during playoff games, meaning that no financial burden would be passed on to the universities.
We ask that the NESCAC reconsider and update its policy on postseason competition. This better places our conference on an equal playing field and is more inclusive for our student-athletes. Let us together, as a conference, make a case for a change that promotes our student-athletes and engenders competition among our institutions.
