Grant Monthly Stipends or Benefits to Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

The Issue

My best friend, a devoted grandmother, is tirelessly raising her grandchildren without the financial support they need and deserve. The biological parents are absent from the picture, not contributing to the upbringing of their own children. This situation is unfortunately not unique to her; it mirrors the struggle of millions across the country. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 2.7 million grandparents are primary caregivers for their grandchildren. Many of these grandparents find themselves in difficult financial circumstances, often relying on fixed incomes and limited support.

In scenarios where the biological parents are not fulfilling their financial obligations, grandparents are forced to shoulder the burden alone. The government acknowledges the importance of these caregiving arrangements, yet there remains a significant gap in actual financial support provided to these families. An Executive Order from the President could change this reality, offering much-needed assistance to those who selflessly provide a stable and loving home for their grandchildren.

Granting a monthly stipend to grandparents in custody of their grandchildren, when support from absent parents is not forthcoming, could alleviate the pressure and stress that threatens the well-being of both the caregivers and the children involved. This support would not only provide financial relief but would also recognize and validate the invaluable role these grandparents play in our community and in the lives of their grandchildren.

We urge the President to consider this measure seriously and act in favor of an Executive Order that acknowledges the responsibilities grandparents have taken on in the absence of failing parents. Empower these unsung heroes with the financial resources necessary to continue their critical work.
