Grant Lunch Extensions in Louisiana

The Issue

As a student, my lunch has been shortened. This has been affecting my daily life, as the lunches are now only 43 minutes long. Shorter lunches affect many during lunch activities, which many students at my school share a concern for.

Eating a hot lunch in the cafeteria means there's a line. That line takes about 30 minutes. I would usually get about 11 to 8 minutes to eat my lunch. This affects my digestive system, and because we only get such little time to eat, some people skip lunch in general. Club meetings are during lunch, and 43 minute lunches are just not enough time to have a club meeting and also eat. Our retakes for tests are also during lunch, so only having 43 minute lunches isn't enough time, since we would most likely focus more on getting a better grade than eating. Tutoring is also during lunch. There are many activities during lunch, and 43 minutes will not be enough time. Skipping meals affects our learning, according to Skipping lunch: the unknown repercussions. Focusing in class with an empty stomach doesn't benefit anyone.

Many parents also share this concern, since their children aren't able to focus in class, participate in activities that look good for college, and aren't able to receive the amount of nutrition they need. A couple friends and I have tried giving this type of schedule a chance, but it hasn't benefited us in any way. Classes only get an additional five minutes, which can't be used for much. Please help us gain back our longer lunches. Thank you.
