Grant Local Nature Reserve Status to Bowjey Woods, Newlyn.

The Issue

We call on Cornwall Council to grant Local Nature Reserve status to Bowjey Woods (or "the Bowjey") in Newlyn. The UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world and is in the bottom 10% globally for biodiversity. It is vital that we commit to reserving habitats for wildlife where nature recovery can take place.

Bowjey Woods is a self established woodland that used to be a large field and could be easily established as a local nature reserve. It contains mature trees, as well as new trees from the Woodland Trust that have been planted more recently and areas of scrubland. The woods channel the run-off from the fields above, which also means that it contains some boggy areas that are also good for wildlife. This means that despite being a relatively small area, the Bowjey contains a variety of habitats and could be officially designated as a nature reserve, without needing any input from Cornwall Council, other than the occasional tree maintenance that Cormac already provides.
