Skellig Michael, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located off the coast of County Kerry in Ireland, is a crucial part of the local economy and culture. However, despite receiving extensive media coverage and public interest, it has remained closed since the opening date of May 10th. Landing permits for the 2025 tourist season have yet to be issued. This delay threatens the livelihood of countless individuals and businesses across the Skellig Coast.

Boat operators remain at sea, unable to dock, losing precious days of the short season for landing on Skellig Michael. Businesses that rely heavily on tourism, such as local bed and breakfasts, hotels, cafés, and tour operators, are experiencing severe repercussions. Bookings are being canceled, leading to significant financial losses and economic instability in the region.

The absence of clear communication and action by the responsible authorities is alarming. It is vital that immediate steps are taken to issue these necessary permits. Doing so will not only preserve the cultural significance of the area but also safeguard the economic stability of the tourism and related businesses that depend on this attraction.

We urge the relevant authorities to recognize the importance of timely permits for the continued prosperity of County Kerry. Without timely action, the 2025 tourism season—and with it, the livelihoods of many in our community—remain at risk.
