The Issue

Help our children get the education they deserve!!

Statistics in Moray show there are the following number of children in each age group with additional support needs:

250 in nursery

2414 in primary schools and

2545 in secondary schools

Yet, after meeting with professionals an action group of parents and carers of children with additional support needs were told there isn’t significant need / population for a special school in Moray. Why then do other smaller local authorities have access to these facilities?

Clearly, the statistics show that there is in fact a need and the children of Moray are being let down by our local council and the Scottish Government. There is a new academy being built in Moray which, is needed, yes, however isn’t this an opportunity to use funding to accommodate children with additional support needs the same support and resources as their peers?

Many children in Moray are on reduced timetables or are not attending an educational establishment at all thus having an effect on their mental health and social skills as well as the mental / physical health of their parents/carers.  Although our children who attend a mainstream school are receiving an education they still experience segregation and exclusion from peers in an ASN hub or base whereas if they had their ‘own’ school that was solely for those with additional needs surely it would remove the stigma and segregation children with complex needs face.

Please help us show Moray Council and Scottish Government that there IS a high need for a special school in Moray or our children are in danger of growing up without vital physical, cognitive, social and emotional skills.
