Starburst: Stop Killing Insects to Make Your Jellybeans #debugstarburstcandy

The Issue

Did you know that Starburst Jelly Beans contain shellac from lac beetles in their "confectioner's glaze?"  An estimated 70,000 beetles are killed to make just one pound of shellac, and shellac can contain insect parts.  Shellac is used to make the shiny outer coating of the jelly bean.  Shellac cannot be made without killing tens of thousands of beetles.

It's 2021, and there are alternatives to confectioner's glaze.  In fact, other brands of jelly beans (Jolly Rancher, YumEarth) do not use insect-derived ingredients, but instead use carnauba wax, a plant-based alternative derived from palms.  In fact, Starburst brand jelly beans contain carnauba wax as well as confectioner's glaze.  It would be straightforward for Starburst to make the change if the carnauba wax is already in their supply chain.

Let's fight for a beetle-free Easter, and please sign this petition and encourage Starburst to #debugstarburstcandy!
