As a mother who is whole-heartedly dedicated to the well-being of her son, I am petitioning for the return of my custodial rights. My parents currently hold full custody of my son, a situation that transpired due to circumstances beyond my control. I am now in a stable job, maintain a clean and nurturing home that I pay for, and am 100% drug-free. Yet, despite these significant changes in my life, my son remains legally separated from me.

The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges explains that children often have more positive life outcomes when they can maintain meaningful relationships with their biological parents, where no harm is discernable (1). I am unequivocally fit to be the primary caregiver for my child, providing a loving and safe environment that he needs to flourish.

Being a mother is not just about birth, it's about nurturing, loving, caring, teaching, and guiding a child throughout his life. It is time that society recognizes the ability of a mother, such as myself, to redefine her life in a way that ensures the safety, health, and wellbeing of her child.
