The Issue

"My brother Leroy has been in prison for 20 years because he stole a mobile phone in a non-violent street robbery. He was sentenced to two and a half years but an indeterminate sentence for public protection (IPP) was added. IPP's have no release , so my brother has been in prison for over half of his life for a mistake he made 2 decades ago.

The IPP sentence was abolished in 2012, and the UN has called them 'inhumane' but Leroy is still not free. He has done his time 8 times over, and has completed 36 educational courses whilst in prison. It's time he came home and started his life again."

In the UK about 2.3 million people are in jail (Wagner & Sawyer, 2020). A shocking number of these individuals, like my brother, are serving lengthy sentences that do not align with the severity of their offenses. My brother's story is, unfortunately, not unique.

This issue hits home for millions of families, reminding us that our judicial system is overdue for reform. However, until those changes come, we must fight for the individuals who fell victim to this inequitable situation which is why we are requesting clemency for my brother.

I ask you to stand with us in this fight. Let us ensure that my brother’s sentence is reflective of his actions - not a victim of an unforgiving system. Please sign this petition to grant my brother the clemency he deserves.
