Grant Bergen County Academies Students a Day Off for the 2024 Solar Eclipse

The Issue

As a passionate group of young astronomers and space enthusiasts at Bergen County Academies, we are eagerly anticipating the upcoming Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024. This celestial event is not just an astronomical phenomenon but also an educational opportunity that will foster our love for science and exploration. The path of totality is only three hours away from us, making it a feasible journey for students to witness this rare occurrence.

Solar eclipses are not everyday events; they occur somewhere on Earth about every 18 months. However, experiencing one in totality - where the moon completely covers the sun - is even rarer. It's estimated that any given location on Earth experiences a total solar eclipse only once every 375 years (source: NASA). This makes our proximity to the path of totality in 2024 an exceptional educational opportunity.

Many students at BCA share our enthusiasm and would greatly appreciate if school authorities could recognize this unique learning experience by granting us either a field trip or a day off from school. This would allow us to fully immerse ourselves in observing and understanding this spectacular event without worrying about missing classes or assignments.

We believe that education extends beyond classroom walls and textbooks; real-world experiences like witnessing a solar eclipse can inspire young minds like ours more than anything else. We kindly request your support in making this possible for all astronomy-loving students at Bergen County Academies by signing this petition.
