Tonight I went to speak to one of my local scouts group and raise awareness about air pollution and the impact it was having on children’s health. The group were engaged and full of life with lots and lots of probing questions. I did warn them in the beginning that some of their questions I might not be able to answer. One young boy asked in disbelief why the Govt cannot phase diesel out before 2040 if it was one of the main pollutants? They were very surprised to learn that sitting in a car they were still being affected by air pollution they assumed being in the car they were safe. Young people remain passionate about the environment and the unspeakable truth is we are not making their health a priority as they are one of the most vulnerable groups adversely affected by air pollution. Part of the reason is their lungs are not fully developed. We discussed the fact that Urban air pollution is worst and children in cities are most affected. The solutions are multilayered but to do absolutely nothing will be unacceptable.
