As a student in the Spanish immersion program in Minnetonka, MN, I sometimes find myself overwhelmed with schoolwork. While non-immersion students have the opportunity to complete homework during advisory periods, we, the immersion students, are not afforded this same privilege. This discrepancy is not only unfair but also adds some unnecessary stress to our constantly changing academic schedules. In a normal week, the only time I have to work on homework during the day is during MAST.

In Minnetonka schools specifically, there are over 3,000 students enrolled in language immersion programs as reported by Minnetonka Public Schools District. These students deserve equal opportunities for success as their peers who are not in these programs.

By granting advisory periods to Spanish and Chinese immersion students alike, we can level the playing field and ensure that all students have an equal chance at academic success. This change will not only benefit current students but future generations of learners who choose to take on the rewarding challenge of language immersion.

Adding an advisory period for immersion students does not have to meaning the full time that non-immersion students have – rather, it could just be a smaller piece of time dedicated to work on missing assignments, homework, and summative projects.

Now is the time to act. New students are joining the Minnetonka Middle School community each year, and they deserve the same opportunities as their peers.
