Grant Adopted Adults the Right to Revoke Adoption

Grant Adopted Adults the Right to Revoke Adoption
The Issue
I am adopted, and throughout my life, I have encountered countless other adopted individuals who have endured traumatic or toxic upbringings at the hands of their adopters. In my case my adopted parents have abandoned me, therefor abandoning their rights, duties, and love. They did this when I was still a minor. Emotional scars left by these experiences cannot be healed while we remain legally bound to those who have not provided the love and support every child deserves. In many jurisdictions, adopted children have no legal recourse to revoke their adoption once they reach adulthood. This lack of choice perpetuates feelings of oppression, isolation, and helplessness among those who have suffered under the guise of a family.
This petition calls for legislative reform to grant adopted adults the right to revoke their adoption. It is a fundamental human right to choose one's associations and relationships, and adopted citizens should not be deprived of this autonomy. By providing an avenue to sever legal ties, we empower adopted adults to take control of their lives and find the closure or new beginnings they seek.
Evidence suggests that many adopted individuals face psychological challenges due to dysfunctional family dynamics. According to a study by the American Psychological Association, adopted individuals are more likely to experience identity struggles and mental health issues compared to their non-adopted peers. Granting the ability to revoke adoption can lead to improved well-being and mental health for those who feel trapped in harmful familial situations.
The current system does not reflect the complexities and realities of adoption. By amending adoption laws to include revocation rights, we create a more just and equitable society that recognizes the rights and needs of all its members. Other countries have successfully implemented such measures, proving it is a viable and necessary change.
