Grant a Complete reinvention of bus services in Wakefield
The Issue
I am looking to petition to have Arriva forced to revise and revamp their full service across the Wakefield area.
Practically every day I am like so many around Wakefield stuck in a predicament where I am buying a weekly bus pass for work. A ticket that currently costs me a recently risen £21.50, however the bus service is practically none existent. Provided is a screenshot of the Arriva App timetable which shows numerous buses early in the morning cancelled, which in turn means, after buying a weekly pass, I am having to spend (again, almost daily) more money for my commute to and from work.
Putting my own personal poor experiences aside, I ask people to consider, beyond the fact that people work all day and don't want to be stuck in a bus station for literally 2/3 hours some days. Some have kids that they need to get home to or collect from places, various important appointments etc.
Beyond the constant cancellations of numerous buses one after another, after another...the staff have got no interest in what the public thinks. The drivers, often don't bother to even log in to their terminals on the buses until the bus is already past due, because they are too busy smoking at the other end of the station or chatting away to other staff members. You ask them why the buses don't show or are so late and they either have no idea or they just kind of look at you like you are stupid for thinking they have to actually follow their bus schedule. And what's worse to my knowledge there is no disciplinary action or consequence for this sort of poor service.
It's fairly well known to local residents that we have the worst bus service in the country. And I believe it's time that changed. I personally have nearly lost my job numerous times due to unreliable bus services and staff members.
'm aware our roads aren't always the best and can get very busy, however buses just not showing up or setting off from the station because it was so late in just isn't acceptable.
I would like to propose, that either Arriva are as a company removed from Wakefield services and replaced by a better company, OR; they are forced to review all services, and regardless of the situation, not be allowed to cancel more than two consecutive services from any one route. Drivers and all staff members alike should be disciplined when they haven't logged in and got passengers on their bus in time for the bus being due to leave the station or are more than a certain amount of time behind their scheduled time. There needs to be more communication between drivers and other staff where that drivers route is concerned, so that if customers have questions or queries the drivers can adequately answer that question. Bus tracking needs to be more legitimate instead of showing buses are on time and then they just aren't appearing as this simply isn't fair on the customers.
This service isn't just a cause for concern in regards to how someone could lose their jobs or not be there to pick their kids up, but also stress is caused by panic and if someone religiously gets one of say, 3 buses and none of them turn up, we panic naturally how it'll affect us and our own lives, which then increases further risks of anxiety beyond our travel arrangements. And as I say, after December all prices are going back up, and I for one, will be damned if I'm not going to keep raising this issue if the bus service can expect more money if they can't provide the service they are there for.
The government want us to use public transport services more, however why would we with how poor it truly is.
So please sign this petition, let's get it put to our local government and force arriva to either make changes that are actually effective or make way for a better more reliable company who can keep up with a bustling cities population and need for a good service!
