As a student apart of the LGBTQ+ community, some of my friends happen to transgender and being a student that goes to Grandville High school I see staff members telling my friends and other transgender students that they are not allowed to use the bathroom that they prefer. At Grandville they do have private bathrooms in the counseling office for students and teachers however those bathrooms still say men and women as well as students being told to use the bathroom with the assigned sex that they were born with. Many others and myself believe that this is absolutely ridiculous. I am horrified at the sight of staff members telling transgender student this. They say it is for safety reasons but what about the safety of our transgender students? It is more likely for an incident to happen with a trans student when they are using the bathroom for the sex they were assigned at birth. Not only could they be harassed but physically abused as well. I hope that we can come together as a community to help Grandville see how this affects students in general.
