Allow Grandview ISD students to have facial hair
The Issue
We are kindly asking Grandview ISD School Board to remove the requirement for male students to shave their facial hair. If you are unable to attend the meeting on Monday 2/21/22 at 6:30 pm, or if you would like to show support for the reconsideration of the no facial hair rule please consider signing. This is only to show support of the change and in NO way is meant to show any disrespect towards the administration or educators of GVISD. You are welcome to leave comments, but please keep them respectful.
Many dermatologists agree that shaving is not only not necessary, but can actually be harmful. “There is no hygienic or medical reason you need to remove hair. In fact, the opposite is true. Whenever hair is removed, no matter how it is done, the process may create microscopic traumas & expose you to infection.” - Jules B. Lip off, dermatologist & professor at School of Medicine @ University of Pennsylvania
“Growing facial hair helps to reduce acne & blocks out harmful UV rays.” - Orem Dermatology Center
“Shaving can irritate & even worsen acne because the hair follicles are cut & the hair removed, leaving a small open ‘wound’ on the skin (this is especially common if using multi-blade razors)” - WebMD
“Atopic eczema is a particularly troublesome disease in daily life and can be made worse by everyday actions that are harmless for most people, such as shaving…” Fondation Eczema
In addition to the health concerns & medical reasons why shaving isn’t in our students’ best interest, there are also academic benefits to not shaving:
“When students are physically comfortable, they’re more at ease: They can relax, block out negative thoughts & focus more effectively on instruction…. Creating an environment that is comfortable for everyone is being mindful of ALL students’ needs.” - Spaces4Learning
“According to our study, the higher the students ranked how comfortable they were, the higher score they received on their exams. It was concluded that people do better during exams when they are dressed in what they feel is most comfortable. Not only does comfort boost exam scores, it also has been shown to increase productivity at school, work & home.” - Austin Community College
“Teens should be allowed to decide if they want to keep facial hair or not!” - Devon Breithart, school-based occupational therapist
If you agree that students should be allowed to keep their natural, normal facial hair then please sign below. We would like to use this simply as a visual example to show our school board how many students, parents & community members feel that our school could benefit from having this rule changed.
