Grandfather Existing Microsoft 365 Family Subscribers’ 6TB Storage Entitlement
The Issue
Petition to Microsoft
For years, Microsoft 365 Family has been marketed and sold on the basis that families can share up to 6TB of OneDrive storage, with each family member receiving 1TB of personal storage.
Many customers chose Microsoft 365 Family specifically because of this storage allocation. Families have organised their digital lives around it, storing photographs, documents, videos, backups, and important personal data with the understanding that the service would continue to offer the storage advertised when they subscribed.
Microsoft's decision to reduce the storage allocation available through Microsoft 365 Family represents a significant change to a core feature that existing customers relied upon when making their purchasing decisions.
While we recognise Microsoft's right to introduce new products and pricing structures, we believe existing subscribers should not lose a key benefit that formed part of the value proposition of their subscription.
We respectfully ask Microsoft to:
- Grandfather all existing Microsoft 365 Family subscribers so they retain their current 6TB storage entitlement.
- Apply any new reduced-storage model only to new subscribers joining after the change takes effect.
- Clearly communicate Microsoft's long-term plans for storage allocations so customers can make informed decisions about their subscriptions and data storage strategies.
Why this matters
This issue is not simply about storage capacity.
It is about trust.
Customers subscribe to long-term services because they believe the advertised features and benefits will remain available throughout their subscription journey. When major benefits are reduced after customers have committed their data, workflows, and family accounts to a platform, confidence in the service is undermined.
We believe a fair compromise exists.
Existing subscribers should be allowed to retain the storage benefits they signed up for, while Microsoft remains free to introduce new plans and storage limits for future customers.
We ask Microsoft to listen to its loyal customer base and preserve the 6TB entitlement for current Microsoft 365 Family subscribers.
