This is in context to your recent fatwa against the all-girl band Pragaash. This is less a fatwa and more a direct, misogynistic threat to silence young girls who have chosen for themselves a career path untrodden by women of Kashmir.
Mr Grand Mufti you have forgotten that Kashmir has a long tradition of Kashmiriyat and Kashmiriyat is an expression of solidarity and resilience regardless of religious differences. It embodies an ethos of harmony and a determination of survival of the people and their heritage. In this context, your nefarious and illogical fatwas have caused more harm than they have done any good.
Women in music industry is nothing new in Kashmir. We have stalwarts like Raj Begum, Shameema Azad, Kailash Mehra and Mehmeet Syed singing for the past so many years. You must be aware that Raj Begum has been awarded the Padma Shri award in 2002.
Pragaash means from Darkness to Light and we see in them a ray of hope emerging from the darkness of despair.
Kashmiri women have been always on the forefront, from Kot Rani fighting large invading armies to Parveena Ahanger fighting the world’s largest democracy.
We have never seen a fatwa from you when women sing and dance on government functions like the Republic Day or the Independence Day which explains the dubious character of this fatwa.
Previously also you have threatened American citizens to leave Kashmir and before that you summoned a Christian Pastor to your self styled Shariah Court and ordered him to leave the State. These things portray a negative image of the people of Kashmir bringing us immense shame. You have failed as an ambassador representing the people of Kashmir to conduct your duties properly.
We appeal you to step down from the Chair of Grand Mufti of Kashmir and let some fresh blood take the spot.
