Abolish the Dress Code!

The Issue

Granada Hills Charter High School’s dress code is outdated and sexist. “No off the shoulder tops or spaghetti strap tops”, “No visible midriffs, cleavage or underwear” It is designed for women, but our shoulders and stomachs are not distracting. Our bra straps are natural, not a crime. Change is needed, especially for it being 2021. What we students wear is not “distracting”. What is distracting is taking time out of the school day to have to walk the long path to the Dean’s office to change into old reused clothes. With the new school year, we should be able to express ourselves through fashion, it a way of creativeness. It’s time to change the slut-shaming and sexist dress code to an inclusive and creative dress code. There should be exceptions to what actually is distracting (nudity). The girls are exhausted of planning outfits around the dress code and being scared of being slut-shamed by administration. School is supposed to be a safe place for students, where we can express our true characters. Please let us make our own choices for we are mature teenagers. We are soon to be adults and should be treated as ones. Our adolescence is a very important time for character growth, and you as a school do know that. If we can’t express ourselves, how can we grow as humans! So, I respectfully ask you.. Do my shoulders offend you?
