Dear allies

Five years ago George Floyd was killed due to the colour of his skin.

Racism is on the rise.

The white man who assaulted Belly has escaped Justice.

We have set up a new anti-racism movement to challenge the growing racism and lack of justice. So take a breath, and join the NO movement (TMM) - www.thenomovement.org.uk

TNM is an anti-racist hub, network and allyship created to bring together the Black (ie: non-white) Community and their allies to work together to empower Black workers to resist and defeat racism at work, and in society

Presently, Black workers are disproportionately engaged in the low wage economy, and are also paid 26% less than white workers. The equal pay debt owed to Black workers is currently £300 billion

30% of Black workers suffer racial harassment at work (and 40% will experience it over any 5 year period of work)

Only 1% of race victims speak up in the workplace to challenge racial harassment, so 99% of racist incidents go unchallenged

TNM was formed today for three reasons:

(1) Racism at work (and in society) is on the rise. Racial harassment at work doubled in the 2016-2020 period increasing from 16% to 31% during that period, and it has grown significantly since then. We are also seeing more racially aggravated assaults, and murders.

(2) The safety of the Black Community is under threat, further to the August 2024 race riots, the murder of Bhim Kohli, and the growth of anti-”foreigner” hate campaigns. It is becoming endemic, and normalised. For example, 95% of Black students have experienced negative racist banter at school or college, and experience disadvantage and obstruction to their educational achievement due to racist stereotypes.

Normal day to day activities such as shopping are becoming potential minefields, with Blacks shoppers stereotyped as potential shoplifters and in one case, at a Tescos, offered a bunch of bananas when she complained.

Of the 500,000 or more Black workers who suffer racial harassment at work this year, only 1% will formally complain about it. 99% will suffer in silence and/or have to leave/change their employment. They are too afraid to speak up and to say NO to racism, because of the fear of retaliation and because they do not believe that they will be afforded Justice if they do complain.

Those who do complain feel isolated and ostracised. Further, currently only 4% of claimants win race cases at the Employment Tribunal and for those that do WIN the average award is still only £12,000.

In practice, the Equality Act 2010 is not fit for purpose, and must be replaced with an Inequality Act. Basically, Black workers are unable to say NO to racism and their mental health is damaged by the hostile working environment, with more Black Lives lost to suicide each year than to gun or knife related killings.

(3) No existing organisations or movements have been effective in tackling the economic causes of racism, and/or racism at work. Therefore, a new approach is required. One which brings Black Community and their allies together, ends silo-ed thinking, and uses the resulting economic power and strength in numbers to compel structural change.
