Legally recognized third gender option in NC
The Issue
As more and more states are legally recognizing a third gender option on official documents, North Carolina has still neglected to do so.
The option for an "X", rather than an "M" or "F", gender marker would relieve the distress that non-binary individuals like myself feel when forced to mark "Male" or "Female" on official documents.
Non-binary individuals are anyone who does not identify wholly as either male or female - rather, non-binary people are more in between or off the binary as a whole. Because of this, having to choose from one of the "standard" options can be very distressing.
There are many people who would really benefit from this gender neutral option. Plus, it would be a great way to battle the notion that North Carolina is a typical southern state - slow to adopt more progressive laws.
I believe in my state and our ability to care for all individuals - regardless of gender.
