STOP the release of GMO mosquitos in Florida!

The Issue

Genetically modified mosquitoes are set to be released in the Florida Keys and will be introduced in small areas in a select number of neighborhoods between mile markers 10 and 93 in the Keys as a part of the Oxitec Mosquito project . THIS COULD LEAD TO SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES BOTH TO HUMANS AND THE ECOSYSTEM.

In mid-2012, British biotech company Oxitec released the super bugs with the aim of reducing the overall mosquito population that spreads dengue fever, the Zika virus, and chikungunya in northeast Brazil.

"It's a very experimental approach which has not yet been successful and may cause more harm than good," Dr Helen Wallace, director of GeneWatch, told the Guardian in 2012.

The first cases of Zika in the Americas were reported in May 2016 after spending decades working its way from Africa through Asia.

Up to 1.5 million people now thought affected by the virus, which Oxitec’s critics note is the same country where the GMMs were released - Brazil. ***Zika Outbreak Epicenter happens to be the same area where GM Mosquitoes were released In 2015****    Since the outbreak, there have been over 4,000 cases of babies born with microcephaly in Brazil, although various others causes can also be attributed to the rise.

We need to STOP this experiment, Sign this petition and urge Governor Ron DeSantis to end this catastrophe before it is too late. The effects can be detrimental to future generations as we can see in Brazil case and the rise of microcephaly (Microcephaly is a condition where a baby's head is much smaller than expected. During pregnancy, a baby's head grows because the baby's brain grows. Microcephaly can occur because a baby's brain has not developed properly during pregnancy or has stopped growing after birth, which results in a smaller head size.)
