Change In FL Food Industry: Review Current Standards for Animal Confinement
The Issue
Food produced in factory farms has a higher possibility of posing a risk to the health of the public due to the overly congested nature of animals in farmhouses. Animals are typically cramped together, living in their own feces in a space where the air is polluted and filled with traces of fecal dust. This not only encourages widespread disease, but leads farmer to use more antibiotics on the animals. When we eat meat from these animals we are at risk of becoming antibiotic resistant, leaving us vulnerable to many illnesses that could potentially kill us.
The citizens of the state of California have made a change in their state by getting a new law created called Proposition 2 - or the “Standards for Confining Farm Animals”. The law expressly forbids any confinement of farm animals that prevents their ability to turn around freely and extend their limbs. Floridians can follow their example and campaign for a law to be made with these requirements. This will reduce the over congestion problem in factory farms and the health risks associated with the over congestion. Signing and sharing this petition to make a change in our own state is the first step to changing the food industry throughout the entire country.
