Petition updateStop Memorializing a Slave Owner and White Supremacist: Rename Jefferson Davis HighwayJefferson Davis Hwy Name Change Proposal for Prince William County

28 Sept 2017
ACTION ITEM: On Tues. Oct. 3rd, the Prince William County Board of Supervisors will consider a proposal by Supervisor Frank Principi to remove Jefferson Davis's name from Route 1. Prince William has become the third local government in Virginia to consider a name change for Jefferson Davis Highway - a welcome development which shows that our petition is gaining momentum and support in Virginia. I have linked a recent news article for more background about the name change proposal in PW County.
ACTION REQUESTED: Please send a group email to all eight Supervisors advocating support for the name change. The group email can a short one sentence message which simply expresses how you think they should vote on the name change proposal or you can send a longer more thoughtful message. My goal is to make this as easy as possible for you and to not take too much of your time but we do want to let the PWC Board of Supervisors know that the name change proposal is popular. But we do want to fill their inboxes!
Also, if you live outside of Prince William County or outside of Virginia your opinion still matters and I encourage you to still write to the Board. In the post-Charlottesville era, the name "Jefferson Davis" has taken on a much higher level of toxicity. Local leaders are concerned about the impact that the name will have on tourism. They are sensitive to any potential loss of business to firms and retailers located on this main thoroughfare due to the stigma now associated with the name. So, the opinions of outsiders definitely do matter!
Below are the email addresses for your group email to all eight Supervisors. In addition to your message on the name proposal, please include your name and your city and state at the end of your message.

You may address the Supervisors in the email collectively (eg. "Dear Board of Supervisors") but if you want to use their names you can. This County link provides a list of the Supervisors' names - http://www.pwcgov.org/government/bocs/pages/bocs-landing-page.aspx
ALTERNATIVE ACTION REQUESTED: If you live in or nearby PW County you may want to attend the Supervisors Meeting and present oral comments in person. Please be aware that Neo-Confederate, 2018 U.S. Senate candidate Corey Stewart sits as Chairman on the PWC Board of Supervisors. I say this because Chairman Stewart has a tendency to stir up controversy with his outspoken support of Confederate monuments and the meeting could become contentious. I don't have any information about any pro-Confederate groups showing up to the meeting but it would be remiss for me not to urge caution and common sense when interacting with groups or individuals with opposing views.
The date, time and location of the meeting are provided below:
DATE: Tuesday, October 3rd
TIME: Meeting begins at 7:00pm
LOCATION:
Prince William County McCoart Administration Building
Board Chambers
1 County Complex Court
Woodbridge, Virginia
Once again, thank you for your involvement and support!
