A recent Virginia State Department of Education report described the state's school system as being "regressive" with declining reading levels in spite of having one of the highest income levels in the country. As it stands, there are only 8 charter schools in the state. compared to about 120 in neighboring Washington, DC and approximately 50 in Maryland. There are charter schools interested in coming to Virginia but are concerned about the political climate here. If we can show the support for school choice, it would help move things along.
