STOP widespread fumigation in Puerto Rico NOW!!
The Issue
***Since the time that this petition was started, the Health Department and Agriculture Department of Puerto Rico, both decided in favor of the spraying with NALED. At the Puerto Rican House of Representatives hearing today, all of the agencies that were present, recommended fumigations with NALED.
The Governor will likely make an announcement tomorrow with a decision!
Let your VOICE be heard say NO to FUMIGATION in PUERTO RICO!!***
There are plans to spray the island of Puerto Rico with chemicals harmful to not only the bees, but also to people as well as the island's eco-system in order to kill mosquitoes that may carry the Zika virus.
Unfortunately, there are no other solutions being discussed.
An insecticide called NALED, a poison that is banned in Europe, is planned to sprayed throughout the island.
NALED exposure can cause tremors, blurred vision, breathing difficulty, pulmonary atrophy, and cardiac depression. In severe cases it can cause convulsions, paralysis, coma or death. http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/metiram-propoxur/naled-ext.html
It has “chronic and acute health effects on both animals and the environment.” http://www.toxipedia.org/display/toxipedia/Naled
NALED will not only kill mosquitoes. It also kills bees…which will impair pollination all over Puerto Rico. http://pilotonline.com/news/bees-whacks-chemical-for-mosquitoes-is-a-buzz-kill/article_ddade5e9-3246-57df-9e5b-de847182e48e.html
It is “very toxic to most organisms,” and has a “severe skin and eye irritant” which can be ingested through food or water. http://extoxnet.orst.edu/pips/naled.htm
Please join the people of Puerto Rico and say NO to the FUMIGATION and ask officials to find safer alternatives to reducing the mosquito population.
