Free Charles Ferguson, 23 years served and 81 left for crimes he didn’t commit

The Issue

Traumatic past starting from birth including separation, deception and death. A beginning in the streets of Philly and ending in Virginia Beach.   A father of 5 by the age of 18 and yes a juvenile record. I am Char’les Ferguson.

My introduction ends at the age of 18 and a life behind bars begins. In 1998 I was sentenced to 104 years without the chance of parole for crimes I did NOT commit. I have DNA test results clearing me of the crime, victim testimonies stating I was not the attacker, and my co-defendant’s notarized affidavit admitting sole guilt to the crimes.  Due to misled guidance of my public defender and unethical techniques of the prosecution I was advised to plead guilty to the crimes as means of avoiding the death penalty (something that wasn’t able to be imposed due to the crimes not involving murder).  I was beaten during my 12 hour interrogation in which all audio and video evidence was lost by the police department.

I am currently 40 years old and have served 23 years without the hope of release.  Despite this injustice and reality I have achieved the following accomplishments:

*Gave my life to God
*Received my GED
*13 years infraction free
*Held employment for over 10 years and am currently a pod laundry worker
*Completed numerous programs
*Currently in advanced electrician class with guaranteed employment by the instructor upon my release
*Founder of a non-profit, Inmates Give Back
*Author of my autobiography, Char’les Ferguson, A True Story of Ending up Behind Bars
*Established home plan
*Served 23 years

This is a plea for support, advocacy and awareness of my deserving immediate release.  I am asking for everyone to join my wife and I in this journey by sharing my story via social media in efforts to capture the attention of millions.  We hope everyone will inquire more about the details of the case and my personal growth.  We are 100% sure this will encourage you to advocate for my release at least by the means of recommendation letters to the Governor requesting approval of my pending conditional pardon.  We also need the assistance of a post-conviction lawyer to lead us to victory regarding filing my writ of innocence on July 1st.  We need advocacy for the anticipated bill in 2021 similar to HB35 that would include ages 18-21.  WE NEED YOUR VOICE!

Governor Northam’s belief of “second chance” is what I am requesting and qualify for.  I have an established home plan, employment and plan to make a difference for our youth. My vision is to tackle the “school to prison” pipeline by telling my story at local schools and events.  I deserve to be reunited with my 5 children and meet my 8 grandkids for the first time.  This excessive and unwarranted stay will remind me forever that this is not where I want to be.  Due to this experience I do not pose any threat or harm to anything or anyone causing reason to return.
