STOP the TAX of necessary feminine hygiene products (Tampons, pads, menstrual cups) in CA

0 have signed. Let’s get to 35,000!

Did you know that in California, people are required to pay an 8.25% tax on pads and tampons? That’s because menstrual products are considered “luxury items,” and not necessities. If you’ve ever had a period, you know that pads and tampons are absolutely necessary, and there’s nothing luxurious about the process.

Ask incoming governor Gavin Newsom to repeal the sexist tampon tax – sign the petition.

This tax is largely levied on women,  who are already more likely to live under the poverty line, and to be paid less than their male counterparts. Half of the population should not be financially penalized for something that occurs naturally in the human body.

Some items are excluded from not only the luxury item tax but also sales tax items like food, which is considered to be necessary for most people to live comfortably. But also on this list are Viagra and candy bars. How can the state of California argue that is Viagra is more necessary than menstrual products?

As young women ourselves, we find it incredibly insulting and sexist that our state gives men a tax break for Viagra, but penalizes women for having periods. Sign if you agree.

Already, campaigns like this one have pushed Nevada, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Minnesota, Maryland and the whole country of Canada to exempt tampons and pads from sales tax. California has a history of stepping up against sexism: in 1995 it was one of the first states to pass a bill that prohibited business establishments from basing the price of services and products on a person’s gender. Now it’s time that our state’s tax laws did the same.

Sign our petition and ask our new governor Gavin Newsom to end the “tampon tax” in California and exempt tampons and pads from sales tax.
