Governor Newsom Declare An Animal Shelter Crisis Emergency in California!
The Issue
Shelters are KILLING ANIMALS for space at an unprecedented rate! People are abandoning and surrendering animals faster than rescues and adopters can save them. California is leading the Nation in Animal Euthanasia Rates! In 2020, California Shelters Euthanized 100,000+ Animals—the numbers will be much greater in 2022 and 2023!!! Shelters, Rescues and Networkers are overwhelmed—we cannot keep up! Please declare a state of emergency for shelter animals and provide support for shelters/rescues statewide!
1) ALL Dog Breeding MUST BE PAUSED!
2) Back yard (illegal breeders) must be fined, prosecuted with mandatory jail time and community service at a kill shelter!
3) ALL animals leaving shelters (including owner returns) must be spayed/neutered! Provide free spay/neuter programs to low income communities. Provide tax incentives/credits for spayed/neutered animals.
4) Fine landlords/HOAs who do NOT allow pets or impose breed restrictions on dogs. All housing should be pet friendly!
5) Encourage ALL homeless shelters to take in people and their companion animals.
6) Provide tax credits and incentives for dog/cat Fosters and Adopters. Invest in advertising to encourage Fostering and Adopting animals from shelters and rescues. The current foster credits are not sufficient.
7) Make animal abandonment a crime, with fines and jail time!
8) Create a database of individuals who surrender their animals, to be accessible to shelters/rescues for greater scrutiny in future animal adoptions.
9) Provide emergency funding to shelters to expand their capacity to take in more animals, instead of killing for space.
10) Provide tax credits for volunteer transporters who assist in transporting animals for the rescues.
We are a long way out from Governor Newsom’s goal of “No Kill California!” As a matter of fact we’re heading in the opposite direction. Animal Welfare is a Bi-Partisan Issue! The Voters of California WILL Remember Who Stood Up for Animals! Please declare a STATE OF EMERGENCY for the California Shelter Crisis ASAP!
