Phil Murphy: Cancel Rent, Mortgage, and Utility Payments in NJ During COVID-19 Crisis.
April 3rd, 2020
Dear Governor Murphy,
As many businesses shutter their doors to cut cost and lay off employees in hope of salvaging revenue, economic uncertainty is at an all-time high for all residents across New Jersey. These changes have resulted in significant financial setbacks for Bergen County and all New Jerseyans. These results are also as a direct result of your ‘stay at home’ order. To accommodate for this losses, it is my hope that you will consider how to encourage the cancelation of rent, mortgages, and utilities to further assist the people of New Jersey that you call ‘family’ during these financially challenging times.
In the past weeks, the nation has seen 10M+ Americans apply for unemployment – the most since 1982. The result of business closures and the effect of layoffs have actualized into panic, as residents of New Jersey worry about how to balance mortgages payments, rent, childcare, groceries, and healthcare cost.
The federal legislators most recent stimulus package that was crafted, is not covering everyone, not nearly sufficient to cover high costs in the state of New Jersey, and it will arrive too late to elevate the emergency need of assistance for people in New Jersey, as well as all over our nation.
As you continue to encourage social-distance to combat this pandemic, you must also stand on the frontline to protect the financial well being of all our residents.
