Why this petition matters

Started by Nathan Spalding

When I first turned 18 I was so excited for the new possibilities. I did not even have to use my ID until I bought my first lottery tickets ticket a few months later. This fall, Ohio increased the age to purchase all tobacco and nicotine to 21. This left myself, along with every other 18-20 year old, in a grey area between childhood and adult hood. While we are able to join the military, vote, pay taxes, and go hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt for our education we are not even able to go to a gas station and buy a lighter. While we need to be protective of the public health, increasing the age to purchase said products will not save any lives. Instead it is the Government sticking its nose in our business because “they know best.” If the repeal of the bill is not considered an option, we would also like to suggest raising the age to join the military, voting age, and require more student loan counseling. Instead of picking and choosing the rights of this age bracket, Ohio should grant all rights at 18 or 21, but not at two different times.
