Do not allow Brian Patrick Merkt release from prison.
Do not allow Brian Patrick Merkt release from prison.
The Issue
In 1996 a little 3 year old girl named Mackenzie Kathryn Bussiere was brutally raped and murdered in her own home by a man she knew named Brian Patrick Merkt. Merkt was convicted of 2nd degree murder and served 18 years in prison. He was released last year into a small community in Linwood Township in Minnesota. He is listed as a level 2 sex offender, therefore, only a very small fraction of the community was notified he was going to reside there. No town meeting was held. The home he was living in is 2 miles from an elementary school. Tom Lyden of Fox 9 News interviewed Merkt and asked him if he had any regrets. He said he did not. He had no regrets for the murder of this 3 year old sweet girl. In April 2014 Merkt was arrested on a parole violation. Because Merkt has his "rights" under the law. the public was not able to know what that parole violation was. He was released. In October of 2014, last week, Merkt was arrested for the 2nd time on an unknown parole violation. He remains incarcerated where he is allegedly going to remain until October 31. It is unknown if Merkt will be released at that time. This petition is important for a very clear reason. A person who commits murder of a child SHOULD NOT be released into a community of young children. Yes, this man did his time according to the law; but he has violated parole twice. It is a matter of time before he offends again. No one should have to live the nightmare this family has and no child should have to endure what Mackenzie Bussiere did before her life was taken. Please, if you have not read about this story, I urge you to visit the Facebook page that was set up called Mackenzie's Wish. It is very informational and you can also offer your support to the family. The mother and sister of this little girl are incredibly poised and strong; but they are reliving a nightmare over and over. Please sign this petition. Thank you for your time and help.
