Legalize Ferrets Once and For All in California
In 1933, California's Fish and Game Commission prohibited the importation or possession of domesticated ferrets. The law was passed based on outdated beliefs and myths that 48 other states have dismissed. You can help us legalize ferrets in California with your signature.

Ferrets are illegal in California under Fish and Game Code Section 2118. I, and all signers of this petition, aim to change that law.
The law was originally passed because of several fears. One fear was that the rabies virus would be spread. A second was feral ferrets forming dangerous colonies. Another reason was because they are "wild" animals and could bite or attack. The fourth and final reason for passing the law was the fear that ferrets would pose a threat as an alien species, threatening fish and bird species in the area.
All of these fears can and have been avoided with simple precautions.
Since 1933, several advancements in veterinary medicine have created a reliable rabies virus for ferrets, thus eliminating the first issue.
The second issue can easily be resolved if all ferrets obtained in the state are required to be neutered. "Fixed" ferrets may not breed with one another, so feral colonies can not possibly form. Breeding permits can be handed out to responsible breeders.
Third, ferrets are domesticated animals. There is strong evidence that they have been domesticated for over 2,500 years. The possibility of them harming anyone more than a couple of nips, is low.
Domesticated ferrets can rarely survive in the outdoors alone, without human supervision. Their hunting skills are not as proficient as wild ferrets. They depend on humans to feed and shelter them. Because of this, they do not pose a large risk on wildlife. In fact, they are about as dangerous, if not less, than a domesticated cat.
All four uncertainties can be avoided. 48 other states have allowed ferrets.
It is time California joins them.
We thank you very much for taking the time to read this letter.
