Arkansas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty
18 Apr 2017
Yesterday, the lives of Arkansas Death Row inmates Don Davis and Bruce Ward were spared. Despite last minute requests, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to vacate the Arkansas Supreme Court’s stay of execution. Today we take a deep breath and prepare for the fight ahead because this is far from over. The next few days will see an ongoing legal battle between the state of Arkansas, the highest court in our country, and us! Governor Hutchinson and his legal allies are determined to proceed with this month’s remaining five executions, beginning Thursday. Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge said in recent a statement that, “The [victims’] families have waited far too long for justice, and I will continue to make that a priority.” But the death penalty is an empty promise for families of victims—finite tax money would be better spent preventing violence and creating meaningful resources for victims’ family members. We need you to act now and continue putting pressure on Governor Hutchinson to act in favor of the inmates whose lives are at stake, and who in several cases, still await the legal guidance of mental health professionals. That’s why we’re asking you to take direct action and call Governor Hutchinson, voicing the following: “I’m calling to ask Governor Hutchinson to halt efforts to appeal the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the stay of all five remaining executions scheduled for this month. I’m counting on the Governor to respect the decision of the highest court in our country, and support their ruling to call off these executions.” Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson can be reached by phone at: (501) 682-2345. We encourage you to give his office a call tomorrow or Thursday. And if you have time, you can make the most impact by calling the Governor on both days. You can also take action right now by tweeting to Governor Hutchinson: http://bit.ly/2pyaawF Just yesterday, he voiced his “frustration in the continued delayed justice” he feels these stays of execution signify. But putting five men to death will not bring about justice—it will only create more victims. You can comment on his Facebook post here: http://bit.ly/2o0WNVM A lot of legal ground is about to be covered in the next 48 hours. We need you to take action now in order to determine its outcome. Please consider calling Governor Hutchinson tomorrow and Thursday, tweeting to him, and commenting on his Facebook post. The lives of five people depend on it.
