Arkansas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty

17 de abr. de 2017
Last week, a federal judge in Arkansas ruled to bar the state from carrying out this week’s executions.
Unfortunately, Arkansas was quick to move to appeal that decision, and the correctional facility where the executions are scheduled to take place are preparing to proceed as planned—in the hopes that last week’s decision will be repealed today.
The first execution is scheduled to take place mere hours from now, at 7 PM Central Time (that’s just under five hours from now), in the event that last week’s decision is repealed. Between now and then we need you to take action and voice your opposition—to Governor Hutchinson himself.
Will you tweet this message to Arkansas Governor Hutchinson today asking him to side with the two men awaiting death in just four and a half hours? http://bit.ly/2nVHm14
Last week the Arkansas Supreme Court also ruled to halt Death Row inmate Bruce Ward’s execution on account of mental incompetence. The state has moved to appeal that ruling as well.
On Saturday Governor Hutchinson posted a Facebook status assuring his constituents that he understands “how difficult this is on the victims’ families,” and that his “heart goes out to them.” You can take action now by letting him know that the best gift to the inmates’ families is that of a fair trial and adequate legal counsel, including that of mental health professionals. Pharmaceutical companies don’t want their drugs being used for these executions. U.S. District Judge Kristine Baker doesn’t want the state to move forward with these executions. Arkansas Judge Wendell Griffen, who placed a hold on the seven executions after protesting them at Fridays' rally, does not want the state to move forward either.
But the state of Arkansas is determined to put these men to death.
Please continue to make your voices heard—today is the most important day of all to keep up the fight.
