At midnight tonight, the death warrants of Arkansas Death Row inmates Ledell Lee and Stacey Johnson will expire. The state is now racing the clock to make sure these men are put to death, while they still can be. But the courts have something else up their sleeves—yesterday Arkansas Supreme Court granted a stay of execution for Johnson, and an earlier ruling from Pulaski County Circuit Court stayed the executions of all inmates on April’s calendar. Yet Governor Asa Hutchinson and the state of Arkansas are determined to move forward with tonight and this month’s executions. Even amid legal attacks from all sides and backlash from the media, Governor Hutchinson still isn’t budging on his agenda to kill. In response to the court’s decision to stay tonight’s execution of Stacey Johnson, the governor responded by saying, “I am both surprised and disappointed at the last minute stay by the Arkansas Supreme Court.” Over one thousand people have spoken out against his statements on social media, including many Arkansas residents. Constituents need to continue speaking up and demand that Governor Hutchinson support the views of those he represents by changing his stance on tonight and this month’s executions.
