Arkansas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty

20 avr. 2017
At midnight tonight, the death warrants of Arkansas Death Row inmates Ledell Lee and Stacey Johnson will expire. The state is now racing the clock to make sure these men are put to death, while they still can be.
But the courts have something else up their sleeves—yesterday Arkansas Supreme Court granted a stay of execution for Johnson, and an earlier ruling from Pulaski County Circuit Court stayed the executions of all inmates on April’s calendar.
Yet Governor Asa Hutchinson and the state of Arkansas are determined to move forward with tonight and this month’s executions.
Even amid legal attacks from all sides and backlash from the media, Governor Hutchinson still isn’t budging on his agenda to kill. In response to the court’s decision to stay tonight’s execution of Stacey Johnson, the governor responded by saying, “I am both surprised and disappointed at the last minute stay by the Arkansas Supreme Court.” Over one thousand people have spoken out against his statements on social media, including many Arkansas residents.
Constituents need to continue speaking up and demand that Governor Hutchinson support the views of those he represents by changing his stance on tonight and this month’s executions. That’s why we’re asking you to call him now and voice the following:
“I’m calling to urge Governor Hutchinson to stand up for the views of myself and his constituents by taking a firm, public stance against the executions scheduled to take place tonight and over the duration of this month. I’m counting on the Governor to comply with the rulings of the state Supreme Court and the Pulaski County Circuit Court and to stop contesting their decisions to stay all of April’s executions.”

The Governor is receiving a lot of negative feedback this week regarding his stance on the death penalty—we need you to really drive that message home today by calling him now.
After you make the call, you can encourage others to do the same by sharing this update on social media.
And if you’re available tonight, you can join us at The Governor’s Mansion for a candlelight vigil at 6 PM, in acknowledgement of the inmates possibly facing death tonight and next week. Here are more details if you’d like to attend: http://bit.ly/2ortmbL
This month’s final execution is scheduled for one week from today. Thanks to your commitment to this work, four lives have been spared. Let’s keep up the fight to make sure #8in10 becomes #0in10.
