Hope For Humberto

The Issue

Humberto Ramirez is a loving husband, devoted father and he's currently sitting behind bars for 23.5 hours per day because he was caught selling cannabis in New Jersey. Humberto was sentenced to (7) years in prison for distributing cannabis and he received his sentence just two weeks after NJ officially legalized cannabis for Adult Use.

New Jersey, a state that has a preexisting Medical Marijuana program and now a decriminalized Adult Use cannabis market seems to still be targeting Black & Brown folks for cheap prison labor. Why else would there have been over 6,000 cannabis related arrest AFTER cannabis was legalized in November of 2020.

Governor Murphy didn't officially sign the bill into law until February 21st of 2021, leaving a window for police to continue the systematic oppression of Black & Brown communities, while using cannabis as an excuse. Humberto Ramirez was a victim of New Jersey's "Mandatory Sentencing Laws" and he's now suffering behind bars for the same plant that everyone else is freely enjoying and some are even profiting off of.

This is disgusting. We now have a wife living without her husband, we have daughters living without their father and a man being held against his will over a medicine that has improved the quality of life for so many people. Please sign this petition so that we can implore Governor Murphy & the legislative powers to release Humberto Ramirez from incarceration immediately.
