Want Privileges for Texas SLPA’s to Provide Tele-therapy in Home Health Settings.

The Issue

The solution is to loosen licensure restrictions around Speech Language Pathologist Assistants being able to do telemedicine under the direct supervision of a Speech Language Pathologist as they do under normal circumstances and settings. This will allow us to be able to continue to provide speech therapy services to the children we treat while keeping them and ourselves safe during this COVID-19 epidemic. It’s also important not to cease speech therapy services at this time, because it could possibly have adverse negative impacts on learning, language, articulation, fluency, feeding, and/or voice skills . as well as the progress they may have shown at this point. There’s a known shortage of Speech Language Pathologists, therefore it would likely alleviate these problems in  language and communication deficiencies. So, by allowing Speech Language Pathologist Assistants to do teletherapy in which they are the top majority who have caseloads in HHA’s will improve the quality of services we provide to ensure a greater impact on the overall language and communication skills. Also, when polled 97% of my current caseload families have committed to completing therapy online. I feel this would also be an excellent opportunity for parents to be hands-on and 100% involved in the therapy process! Positive benefits for kids noted are being able to continue to receive speech services by a Speech Language Pathologist Assistant and negative benefits are kids that’s going without speech services that need it.  We want to continue to be able to provide our specialized services but we also want to ensure our safety and the safety of our beloved clients and their families. Not to mention these services are covered by most insurances.
