FREE KENNY LEE

The Issue

My name is Kenny Lee, a 48-year-old prisoner, incarcerated for a crime committed when I was 19-year-old.  I am serving a sentence of “life without the possibility of parole,” the so-called “other death penalty.”  I am writing to petition for a commutation of my sentence of life in prison.

Since my incarceration, 21 years ago, I have grown from an angry, self-centered, and irresponsible teenager that normalized violence and criminality to a responsible, emotionally, and spiritually mature Christian man.

My change did not come easily or quickly, however.  As a troubled youth, my emotional neediness and destructive, anti-social lifestyle ultimately led me to make the wrong choice that landed me in prison.  But, through the time served, I acknowledge that I deserve to be punished for my conduct and take full responsibility for my wrongdoing.  I am remorseful and deeply sorry for my actions that led to harm for others.

Having that said, I am a very different person who experienced a genuine transformation.  By the grace of God, I have been given a brand-new life with hope, purpose, and a deep desire to serve others.  With a conviction to better myself and the future, I enrolled in community college and completed two Associate in Arts degrees.  My longing for a personal relationship with God also led me to enroll in Harvest Bible University where I am currently working toward a Master’s in Divinity degree.

As a middle-aged Christian man who is seeking to make amends, I am hopeful that one day, I will get a second chance in life.  I dream of obtaining a commutation of the sentence that will provide me with an opportunity to demonstrate my transformation and rehabilitation before the commissioners of the Board of Parole Hearing.  I want to serve the community by counseling young people and make direct amends to society.  I ask for a chance to redeem myself, and to this end, I need your help.  I pray and hope that, after reading, you would consider signing my petition.
