Dear Governor Newsom,

Every year when Highway 128 in Mendocino County floods, Caltrans closes the highway at Flynn Creek Road. While some traffic is diverted over Highway 253, most is not. For those who are traveling to Mendocino or Fort Bragg, taking Hwy 253 would add an additional 45 minutes or an hour to their drive. Instead, MOST of these travelers take Flynn Creek Rd.

Our tiny county road is not made to handle the volume or load that is inflicted on it several times a year, when it is forced to become Hwy 128. The damage from heavy delivery trucks and hundreds of additional vehicles is compounded by the soft, saturated earth that accompanies the road closures.

Our sparsely populated county can not afford to maintain this road as a highway during the winter months. We believe that the State of California should be responsible for this maintenance and repair.

The condition of Flynn Creek Rd is directly linked to the condition of the vehicles that travel this road on a daily basis. Giant potholes and uneven surfaces not only creates unnecessary repairs to our vehicles (tire damage, suspension, wheel alignment & missing hub caps), but also makes for dangerous driving conditions.

We are requesting that State of California pay for OR repair the damage it has done to our road.

Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

The Citizens of Comptche California and nearby community.
